Methanogenic bacteria in human vaginal samples.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Twelve vaginal samples were collected from separate patients, processed anaerobically, and added to methanogenic enrichment medium. Methanogenic activity was detected in two samples, both of which were from patients with bacterial vaginosis. None of the samples from healthy patients yielded positive methanogen cultures. One sample from a patient with bacterial vaginosis did not show any detectable methanogenic activity. Two methanogen isolates were obtained from one of the methanogen-positive samples, and both were identified as Methanobrevibacter smithii on the basis of morphological, cultural, and immunological features.

Methanogenic bacteria from human dental plaque.
Samples of human dental plaque were examined for the presence of methanogenic bacteria. Of 54 samples from 36 patients, 20 yielded H2/CO2-using methanogenic enrichment cultures. All methanogen-positive samples were from patients with some degree of periodontal disease. The predominant populations in the enrichments had morphologies characteristic of Methanobrevibacter spp. In six enrichments de...
متن کاملQuantitative analysis of three hydrogenotrophic microbial groups, methanogenic archaea, sulfate-reducing bacteria, and acetogenic bacteria, within plaque biofilms associated with human periodontal disease.
Human subgingival plaque biofilms are highly complex microbial ecosystems that may depend on H(2)-metabolizing processes. Here we investigated the ubiquity and proportions of methanogenic archaea, sulfate reducers, and acetogens in plaque samples from 102 periodontitis patients. In contrast to the case for 65 healthy control subjects, hydrogenotrophic groups were almost consistently detected in...
متن کامل22. Methanogenic Activity in Sediment from Leg 64, Gulf of California
We detected methanogenic bacterial activity in 6 of 12 sediment samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) locations in the Gulf of California. When samples were incubated anaerobically for three weeks at temperatures of 10 or 22°C, we found activity to sediment depths of about 12 meters. The methanogenic bacteria were inhibited by CHC13 or 2-bromoethanesulfonic acid and were generally stimul...
متن کاملMethanogens outcompete sulphate reducing bacteria for H2 in the human colon.
Methanogens and sulphate reducing bacteria compete for H2 in the human colon, and, as a result, faeces usually contain high concentrations of just one of these two organisms. There is controversy over which of these organisms wins the competition for H2, although theoretical data suggest that sulphate reducing bacteria should predominate. To elucidate this question experiments were undertaken i...
متن کاملRole of dietary sulphate in the regulation of methanogenesis in the human large intestine.
Hydrogen produced during colonic fermentation may be excreted, or removed by H2 consuming bacteria such as methanogenic and sulphate reducing bacteria. In vitro, sulphate reducing bacteria compete with methanogenic bacteria for hydrogen when sulphate is present. In this study the hypothesis that sulphate in the diet could alter CH4 production in vivo has been tested. Six methane excreting volun...
